Murgatroyd’s Salt Works Sculpture

We recently installed this new sculpture at Murgatroyd’s Salt Works in Middlewich, Cheshire.

Murgatroyd’s Salt Works is a unique scheduled Monument that had fallen into a derelict state. A group of like minded local enthusiasts fought to restore the site for use as a heritage resource. It has become a fitting tribute to George Murgatroyd whose vision saved the Middlewich salt industry and kick-started the chemical industry in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Scrap metal from the building’s original brine tank was re appropriated to make the sculpture. Although much of the steelwork was corroded beyond use, what remained had aged and weathered wonderfully, telling the story of its industrial past.

The sculpture’s form was inspired by the regular cuboid shapes of salt crystals.
